The Eden Project was constructed in a 160-year-old exhausted china clay quarry at Bodelva, near St Austell. It was established as one of the Landmark Millennium Projects to mark the year 2000 in the UK.
The nearby town of St Austell is a bustling market town, often referred to as the capital of the Cornish Alps. The ghostly white mini-mountains, the spoilt heaps of china-clay industry lend an eerie atmosphere to the landscape.
St Austell is also home to The Lost Gardens of Heligan, China Clay Park, formally Wheal Martyn and St Austell Brewery; all top tourist attractions.
Most people have heard about Eden’s giant greenhouses, plants, architecture and art but there’s even more to Eden than all of that. Those visiting the Eden Project will need to allow four to five hours.
