Porthleven is the most southerly working port in the United Kingdom and boasts a picturesque harbour, with some interesting old buildings. The harbour used to house a large fishing fleet that harvested the huge shoals of pilchards and mackerel that swam in Mount's Bay.
Fishing still continues in Porthleven with crab, lobster and crayfish being caught locally, some of which is sold on the quayside and in the local cafes, restaurants and inns. Porthleven has managed to strike exactly the right balance, being largely unchanged and unspoilt by tourism yet offering everything that visitors require, including a friendly welcome from the locals.
Porthleven is an ideal base for a walking holiday as it is situated on the Coastal Path. Many of Cornwall’s attractions and theme parks are within easy reach and the large village has several good restaurants, shops and a pleasant beach.
